Symphony of Life & Loss:A Visual Journey Through Climate Change and BiodiversityThe Ask
Create a 2-minute experimental mash-up using at least 25 pre-existing media sources, combining visual and sound elements to develop a clear point of view on an assigned topic. The project emphasized creative source selection, the integration of 1–2 original recordings, and the use of audiovisual techniques—such as looping, layering, split screens, and sound design—to construct a cohesive and expressive audiovisual narrative.
The Idea
Titled Symphony of Life & Loss: A Visual Journey Through Climate Change and Biodiversity, this mash-up approaches climate change and biodiversity as a visual symphony, structured in four movements defined by music and mood. The first celebrates the richness of biodiversity with Vivaldi’s Four Seasons (Spring), highlighting nature in full bloom. The tone then sharply shifts with Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, pairing its intensity with imagery of climate-driven natural disasters. The third movement, set to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons (Winter), reflects the devastating impact on ecosystems and wildlife. The final section introduces Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song”, offering a hopeful resolution through visuals of restoration, regeneration, and collective action. This closing section incorporates original footage I recorded—a woman walking past flowers overlooking Barcelona and a bee flying away from yellow flowers—ending the piece on a human, intimate note. The mash-up concludes with the message: “We are not protecting nature — we are nature protecting itself.”
